Destiny Ministries has been on the Eastside for just six short months, but they’re already working hard to make a big impact in the community.
“We’re trying to reach more than just the spiritual needs of the community,” Pastor Darryl Baker said.
In looking for a new way to reach those that need help, the church decided to try and make the holidays a little brighter for some families in the area.
“A lot of people are under the gun and struggling,” Baker said. “Some of those people want to have a Thanksgiving meal for their family, but it’s going to be a stretch.”
Destiny Ministries is on a mission to make sure those families don’t go without this Thanksgiving.
“We’re putting together boxes of food for families that want help to be able to cook their own Thanksgiving meals,” Baker said.
The church hopes to assemble 20 boxes of food, and each box will contain a turkey, stuffing, canned goods and anything else needed to create a perfect Thanksgiving feast. They estimate each box will cost about $100, meaning the entire project will cost the church about $2,000.
“We’re asking for donations from grocery stores, and we’re also asking local stores if we can set up outside of their locations to collect donations and to outreach for people that need help or know someone else who does,” he said.
Aside from local businesses, the church is looking for help from the community.
“We’re looking for donations, both of food and money,” Baker said.
He added that monetary donations are easier, so congregation members can purchase the same items for each box, but food donations are welcome as well.
The church is also still on the hunt for families to receive the boxes.
Baker says the food boxes are not just for members of his congregation, but anyone in the community.
“We want to help families in the area,” he said. “Anyone in Pickerington, Reynoldsburg, Canal Winchester and the Eastside of Columbus is eligible.”
Volunteers will hand out the boxes at the church’s Sunday service Nov. 18. The service is at 10 a.m., and is held at Marcus Cinema in Pickerington.
Anyone interested in donating to the cause or receiving a food box should contact the church at (614) 833-4637 or visit the website, destinycolumbus.org.
