Transit of Venus

(by Jeff Pfeil, staff photographer - June 06, 2012)

On June 5, the planet Venus passed directly between the sun and Earth, a rare astronomical event. In this photograph, taken in West Jefferson at 7:36 p.m., Venus is the small black dot in the upper right portion of the circle, which is the sun. Looking directly at the sun can damage human eyes, so the photograph was taken through welding glasses, which gave the sun a greenish hue. Previous Venus transits took place in December 1874, December 1882 and June 2004. The next transit won’t occur until December 2117.
