A string of burglaries should have Prairie Township residents taking precautionary measures to stay safe.
There has been a rash of break-ins in north Lincoln Village in the past several weeks. Homes on Beacon Hill Road and Lennox Avenue were among them, along with Annhurst Road, Maple Drive and Park. The most recent occurrences have occurred on Park.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the suspects are breaking a glass door or window at the back of the home and entering the residence. They are then running along the railroad tracks to get away. Most of the property from the Lennox Avenue home invasion was later found along the railroad tracks near Lennox.
Deputy James Plumb from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said most of the burglaries are happening around 2 p.m. when no one is home.
“Usually when we’re taking these reports we try to give some helpful information on how to deter the crime,” Plumb said. “We try to tell most residents, especially if you have a big backyard, to make sure you have blinds in your house. If you cover up the rear window and they can’t see into your home then they’re not going to know to break in because they won’t know if you have a dog or anything else.”
Plumb also said having motion sensor lights around the house at night is one of the biggest deterrents to robberies.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s website recommends neighborhoods start a neighborhood watch group to help deter break-ins.
Keeping all of the doors locked and windows closed when no one is home will also help keep unwanted people out. Also, make sure to close the garage door.
There have also been multiple vehicle break-ins in the Doctor’s Hospital parking lot in the past couple of weeks.
To protect your vehicle and valuables, never leave anything valuable in the vehicle. If there is something in the car, make sure it is kept out of sight from passers-by. Always keep the car doors locked and windows rolled up, and try to park near a lighted area because light is the best deterrent for any crime.
With the holidays coming up, an increase in crime is usually anticipated, so for more information on how to start a neighborhood watch group or how to protect your home, visit http://www.sheriff.franklin.oh.us/.
