Pickerington residents may see prescription assistance

(by Alexa Libert, staff writer - August 11, 2010)

Pickerington residents may soon have access to assistance that will offset some of their prescription drug costs.

During a July meeting, council approved the first reading of a resolution that would authorize the city to participate in a prescription drug discount program.

The program, offered by the National League of Cities (NLC), would allow Pickerington residents to receive a discount on prescription medications by signing up for a free card.

According to its website, NLC is a national organization that represents municipal governments throughout the United States with a mission to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance.

Pickerington has been a member of the organization for many years and pays dues as a participant in the organization.

As a member, the city has access to a number of resources provided by the NLC, including information, marketing, advocacy and training and education, according to the website.

The NLC prescription drug discount card is another benefit provided to its members.

Information provided to the city states residents could save on average 20 percent off their prescription medications.

There are no exclusions. Any Pickerington resident regardless of age, income or insurance coverage would be eligible.

The card is administered by CVS Caremark, but residents are not encouraged or incentivized to use a CVS pharmacy over any other participating pharmacy, according to the information.

In addition, nine out of 10 pharmacies participate in the program and there are more than 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide.

The card would also provide a discount on prescriptions that may not be covered by insurance and can even be used on pet prescriptions that are used to treat human conditions.

Neither the NLC nor the city would receive any revenue for sponsoring the discount card program.
“It doesn’t cost the city anything to support this effort,” City Manager Bill Vance said. “Why not do it?”
