Columbus Fire to hold season opener in Reynoldsburg
The Columbus Fire Minor League Football team is preparing for its 2010 home opener against the Indianapolis Tornados June 26 at Reynoldsburg High School, 6699 Livingston Ave.
Gates open at 6:15 p.m., with the kick off at 7 p.m.
The last time these two teams met on the field it was a very physical game with the Fire taking the win on the Tornados home turf.
June 26 is also Friends and Family day for the season opener. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students (ages 6-17.) Children age five and younger are free.
The Columbus Fire is a minor league professional football team based in Columbus. Formed in 1996 as an independent, the Fire competes against top minor league teams around the nation in the highly respected Mid Continental Football League (MCFL).
The Fire has achieved numerous successes since its creation in 1996. In 1998, the Fire joined the National Minor Pro Football league and finished the season in second place. The next year, the Fire celebrated back to back achievements, winning the 1999 NMPFL Championship, and repeating as the league’s co-champion in 2000.
In 2001, the Fire moved to the North American Football League (NAFL), finishing second place in the division. The team’s success continued in 2003 as the Fire clinched the Great Lakes division championship, repeating in 2004 as the division’s co-champion and winning their third straight Great Lakes division title in 2005. A league change came in 2006, when the Fire switched to the Mid Continental Football League (MCFL). Three years later in 2009, the Fire clinched the Central division championship finishing as the league’s runner up.
The Columbus Fire has a competitive schedule lined up for the 2010 season with seven home games and four games on the road before playoffs begin Oct. 1.
