Juanita Kaufman award in need of nominees

(by Alexa Libert, staff writer - June 10, 2010)

Since 2008, Franklin Township has been recognizing outstanding citizens who demonstrate a “high standard for the community.”

However, this year, no nominations have been submitted, explained trustee Don Cook during the May 27 meeting.

The Juanita Kaufman Award is presented each year to a nominated Franklin Township resident.

Juanita Kaufman, the award’s namesake, was recognized for her service two years ago.

“It’s quite an honor to be given one of these awards,” she said.

Kaufman has quite a resume when it comes to community service.

She has served as the Westbrook-Eastfield Block Watch president for 12 years. She serves on the Southwest Area Commission (SWAC) and is a board member for the Housing Network.

However, Kaufman explained that community service can be demonstrated in a variety of ways, and can be as simple as bringing neighbors together.

Kaufman said she would like to see more young people involved in community service and perhaps even nominated for this year’s award.

In response to the lack of nominees, Franklin Township trustees have extended the deadline through July 23 at 5 p.m.

The recipient will be recognized during the National Night Out celebration on August 3, also known in Franklin Township as Juanita Kaufman Day.

National Night Out “encourages people to take pride in their community and become involved the life of their neighborhood,” explained the press release.

This year’s event will be held at Finland Elementary School and will feature food, activities, music and prizes for participants.

Currently, event organizers are seeking donations for items that can be auctioned or given out as prizes, explained Kaufman.

Over 150 gifts were given last year, she explained.

If you would like to submit a nomination for the Juanita Kaufman Award, include the name and address of the nominee as well as a paragraph about the reason for the nomination and also the name of the person submitting the nomination. Nominees must be a Franklin Township resident.

All nominations should be sent to the Franklin Township business office at 2193 Frank Road.

For more information about donating to the National Night Out celebration, contact Juanita Kaufman at 279-0002.
