Commission's cleaning project to continue
Fed up with the sight of litter along the main corridors, the Southwest Area Commission initiated a program last year that would get the community involved with ‘greening up’ their neighborhoods.
Under the commissions plan, community volunteers would meet with commission members at the parking lot of the New Horizons United Methodist Church every third Saturday from April to July. Volunteers would tackle a different stretch of road each week that was in need of beautification.
As the program got underway, however, it became obvious that most of the volunteers were commissioners.
At the end of the pilot program, the commission discussed whether they should hold another community cleanup for 2010, or just scrap the idea due to low volunteer turnout. During their March 17, meeting, they decided they would try it again.
Set to coincide with Earth Day, the commission will kick-off their second annual neighborhood cleanup project on April 17. Commissioners plan to start at 9:30 a.m. and continue until they run out of steam.
They will continue to meet every third Saturday of the following months (through July) in the parking lot at the New Horizons church and encourage the community to come and join them in their efforts to clean up the community.
