Westland Senior Citizens

The Westside Senior Citizens will meet on Thursday, March 25, at Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road. The program will be Kim Taylor with Battelle Darby Metro Park, who will bring “critters”. The program will begin at 11 a.m. with the meeting at 11:30 and lunch at noon. Bring a dish of food to share. A night of laughter at PUMC

The Parkview Players will present “Triple Play,”  a series of  short comedies, at Parkview United Methodist Church, 344 S. Algonquin Ave., on Saturday, March 13.  The performance, directed by Tom Ross, begins at 7:30 p.m. and has partial support from the Greater Columbus Arts Council Franklin Neighborhood Arts Program.  The cost is $3, and tickets may be  purchased at the door.  

 

“Creation Investigation”

DAR to meet March 13

The Ann Simpson Davis Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at noon on March 13 at The Worthington Retirement Center, 1201 Riva Ridge Blvd., Gahanna. 

Following lunch, a program entitled “Quilts Held by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution” will be presented by Barbara Murray.

West High School class of 1980

The West High School class of 1980 Will hold their reunion on Saturday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at The Old Spaghetti Warehouse on West Broad Street.

There will be an open menu and bar. Everyone will be responsible for their own bill.

Westgate Blockwatch to meet

Westgate Blockwatch will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, March 24, at Parkview Methodist Church, at 7 p.m.

Guest speakers will be John Ivanic, public communications director for Columbus City Council, and Franklin County Deputy Shaun Boyd. Boyd will discuss the gang acitivity on the Westside.

Members of other blockwatches are invited to attend. Coffee and desserts will be served. For more information, contact Karen Lorenz at 272-2650. 

 

Free community meal

St. James Lutheran Church, 5660 Trabue Road, serves a free community meal each Tuesday, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

 

WHS Performing Arts reunion

The Westland High School Performing Arts, 88-92 reunion planning committee is looking for alumni who particpated in band (marching, symphonic or concert), choir groups (chorale, symphonic, concert and men’s/women’s ensembles), and theater groups (fall and spring productions or clubs) for a reunion picnic this summer.  The reunion will be held on July 10 at Hilliard Homestead Park.

WABA Scholarship Auction

The 20th annual Westland Area Business Association  Scholarship Auction will be on Saturday, March 13, at the Charles Mentel Memorial Golf Course starting at 5:30 p.m.  WABA invites you to “Rock Around the Clock” with them for a buffet dinner, cocktails, a silent auction and a live auction. The cost is $45.00 per person.

Many auction items are donated by local businesses. Last year, the auction raised $18,000 towards SWCS scholarships for seniors.

Kinder Vision at Westland Area Library

The Westland Area Kiwanis will bring the KinderVision program for child safety to the Westland Area Library on March 13, from noon to 2 p.m.  This is a free event and all parents and children are encouraged to attend. KinderVision raises awareness on how to avoid abduction and exploitation. 

The Westland High School Key Club and KinderVision will have on site KV Kids and “The Greatest Save” events, teaching personal safety in a fun, interactive way. Participants take home a safety bracelet.

Franklin Township food drive

Franklin Township is hosting a “Hope for Haiti” food drive. Franklin Township residents can stop by the firehouses, located at 4100 Sullivant Ave. or 2193 Frank Road, and donate non-perishable food items to the survivors in Haiti. 

 

“Best Fish Fry Dinner in Town!”

St. Margaret of Cortona Church, 1600 N. Hague Ave., will host the “Best Fish Fry Dinner in Town!” on the six Fridays during Lent, from Feb. 19 to March 26, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner includes fried ocean perch or baked cod, french fries, baked potato, baked steak fries, cole slaw, applesauce, roll and butter, and homemade desserts. Help yourself to free seconds! The cost for the dinner is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $3.50 for children 10 and under. Free coffee is provided. Pop and beer are available for a nominal fee. Carryouts are available at the door.

All-you-can-eat pancake breakfast

The Hilltop Kiwanis Club and the Men of Crossroads United Methodist Church have joined together to raise money to support the children of the Westside. They are offering all the pancakes you want to eat, a sausage patty and drink, for $5. The event will be held March 13, from 7 a.m. to noon at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 1100 S. Hague Ave.  


St. Stephen fish fries

St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 4131 Clime Road, will host weekly Lenten fish fries each Friday beginning Feb. 19 and running through March 26, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. All you can eat fish (fried and baked), choice of side dishes, beverage and dessert included. Free clothing and lunch

New Hope Church, 3060 W. Broad St., will provide free women’s men’s and children’s clothing March 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free lunch will be provided. All are welcome. This is a monthly event. 


Saint Agnes fish fry

The Knights of Columbus and Saint Agnes Parish will host an all you can eat fish fry each Friday, Feb. 12 - March 26 in the Saint Agnes cafeteria, 2364 W. Mound St., from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The dinner will include perch, two sides, rolls, drinks and a dessert. Meatless spaghetti will also be available. Cost is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children. 

 

Glenwood Free Taxes Ministry

The Glenwood Free Taxes Ministry offers anyone making $49,000 or less during 2009 free tax preparation. This ministry is performed by IRS certified and trained preparers who will e-file your federal and state (Ohio only) tax returns. With direct deposit, refunds are received in as little as 8-15 days.

The ministry will run from Jan. 18 – April 12. Taxes will be prepared on Mondays from noon – 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Appointments are expected to last approximately one hour and can be made by calling Glenwood United Methodist Church at 274-8469 or stopping by the church office at 2833 Valleyview Dr.

Music, Message and Meal

There will be a free hot meal served at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad St., on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 6-7 p.m. as a part of Hoge’s HM3 (Music, Message and Meal) program. All are welcome to attend. American Legion Post 799

American Legion Post 799 holds their monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Prairie Township Fire Station, 123 Inah Ave. Anyone interested in joining the legion should attend. Westland Area Commission

Westland Area Commission meets the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Doctors Hospital, 5100 W. Broad St. The commission covers the area bounded on the north by the Conrail tracks, on the west by the Hellbranch Run, on the south by Big Run and on the east by I-270. Rock on the Hill

Rock on the Hill will provide free after school fun for Westside kids every Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m., at 2500 W. Broad St. Activities include snacks, art projects, games and help with homework.

Bus transportation will be provided from West Broad Elementary, but parents must pick children up by 6 p.m.

Now enrolling first grade through fifth grade. Call 233-5829 and speak with director Carmen Ator. 

 

Friends hosts senior group

Senior citizens are invited to a seniors group at Friends Worship Center, 3030 Clime Road, on the first Thursday of each month from 12-2:30 p.m. The event will feature a light lunch, games and fellowship. There is no cost, but registration is required. Contact Martha at 875-8297, Juanita at 279-2382 or Debbie at 274-6505. 

 

PTSC exercise programs

The Prairie Township Senior Center hosts the following exercise programs that are free and open to the public:

•Mondays - 10:30 a.m., aerobics; 2 p.m., line dance

•Tuesdays - 10 a.m., gentle stretchers

•Wednesdays - 10:30 a.m., body conditioning

•Fridays - 10 a.m., gentle stretchers

Free meals offered

The Church of the Lamb of God, 2216 Sullivant Ave., offers free meals on the fourth Saturday of each month.  

 

Awana Clubs

Awana Clubs for boys and girls, from three-years-old to sixth grade, will be held Wednesdays, from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at Briggs Road Baptist Church, 3231 Briggs Road. Call 272-7430 for more information. 

 

Golden Age Center

The Salvation Army Golden Age Center, 2300 W. Mound St., invites anyone aged 60 or over to attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, crafts, movies, BINGO, games, health and fitness, and fun. Call Ellen Marvin, senior director, at 274-7600, ext. 108, one day in advance to reserve lunch for $1.25 per day. Fee for expenses is $9 per month. 

 

VFW Post 6065

VFW Post 6065 will hold their meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings last about one hour and are held at the Prairie Township Senior Center, 4616 West Broad St. Those interested in getting involved or volunteering time should attend a meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary meets at 6:30 p.m. The motivations of the VFW are patriotic, historical, and educational. They strive to perpetuate the memory and history of their dead, and to assist their widows and orphans. Call Will Davis at 309-0171 for further information. 

 

Exercise for seniors

Seniors are invited to exercise on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 55 Pasadena Ave. Men and women aged 50 to 90 and up have exercised at the facility since 2001. The instructor leads each session with warm-ups, play balls, resistance bands, hand weights, some low-impact aerobics and balance activities. Each participant can adapt the routine to his/her comfort level. The cost is $35 for each eight-week session. Call the instructor, Lori Vazquez, at 989-4595 with questions. 


Paper recycling at Parkview

Parkview United Methodist Church, 344  S. Algonquin Ave., is providing the community with recycling bins for paper products. Bring newspapers, magazines, junk mail, etc., to the green and yellow bins in the church parking lot. No cardboard or phone books will be accepted. Questions, call 875-7231.
