Burglaries decrease in Pleasant Township
(by Dedra Cordle, Staff Writer - January 13, 2010)
Pleasant Township residents got a welcomed surprise when law enforcement officials from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office came to the Jan. 12 township board meeting to give the community a criminal activity report for the area.
Deputy John Rautio said the township has seen 20 offensive reports for the month of December, with three of those reports being burglaries, a crime that has been on the rise throughout the township since early last year.
The good news, he said, is that the number of burglary reports from November to December decreased.
"There were eight burglaries that month," said Rautio.
The deputy added that there have been several arrests made in the area (including one of the December burglary cases), which he credits for the drop in burglaries reported within the township.
"We're trying," he said. "We've been out a lot lately, and we patrol as much as we can."
The trustees expressed their appreciation for the visit and asked if they could possibly come out to at least one meeting per month to give activity reports on the happenings in Pleasant Township. Rautio said they would be willing to do so.
Drug-Free workplace
For the past decade, the Pleasant Township Fire Department has been involved with the Working Partners for an Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace program and will continue to do so for the beginning of a new one, said fire chief Jay Noojin.
"This is a program that could not only discover if there is a problem (for an employee), but could get them help if there is," he explained.
Noojin said the Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace program is not exclusively for the fire department as several area businesses and employees at the Road Department participate as well. During the meeting, chairman Keith Goldhardt said the trustees would also be renewing their partnership for another year.
