Income tax vote could affect Bexley
(by Rachel Scofield, staff writer - June 11, 2009)
If Columbus residents vote against raising their city income tax to 2.5 percent, the city may cut fire and emergency personnel who serve Bexley residents.
Bexley has a contract through 2012 with Columbus for those services, but Columbus recently proposed laying-off more than 200 firefighters and closing some fire stations.
“It will certainly impact us one way or another,” Bexley Councilman Jed Morison said. “Currently, we have a very good response time of five to six minutes from the four stations that serve us. Down the line if they layoff firefighters and close stations, the response time will not be as quick and that’s quite a concern. I don’t think there is much we can do about it. This will have a very serious impact on us even though we are not Columbus residents and cannot vote on this particular issue,” Morison said.
