Historical society takes us back for Encampment
The Southwest Franklin County Historical Society presents the 2009 Encampment at Century Village in Grove City April 25.
The Encampment re-creates early life from the American Revolution through the Civil War. To set the mood this year, a free bluegrass concert is planned at Fryer Park on April 24 at 7 p.m. Many songs from the early era will be performed.
Another special event Saturday will be an 1846 style baseball game featuring the Ohio Village Muffins from 12 to 2 p.m.
Re-enactors will be available Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. to tell stories of military survival during the Civil War. Other re-enactors will answer questions from visitors concerning life under the British Crown, American Revolutionary War and prairie life on the Midwest frontier.
A full-sized buffalo will be on display and guests will be able to meet Buffalo Bill, Indian re-enactors and settlers who survived life on the Midwest Plains. Another informative part of the event is a Civil War field hospital display with authentic medical and surgical tools physicians used to treat wounded soldiers.
Day-long activities will include frontiersmen and pioneer homemakers, displays on the loading and discharge of flintlock rifles, cannon fire and military drills. Visitors can also watch a working blacksmith, sample hardtack, Johnny cakes and listen to live performers sing and play songs sung around campfires by Civil War soldiers. Visitors will also be able to test their balance and agility at a tomahawk toss.
Other historical activities and demonstrations will continue through the day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they can experience special activities in the one-room Orders Road School. One of the popular events to return is games children played in the mid-19th Century.
Individuals or groups interested in being part of this event are encouraged to contact Joan or Louis Eyerman at 877-4524 or by e-mail at L_eyerman@yahoo.com.
Information about The Encampment is updated at the calendar of events at www.visitgrovecityoh.com.
The public is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the local food pantry.
