Abandoned properties returned to township

Prairie Township Trustees have approved the transfer of land at Mix and Stiles Avenue from the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation.
In May 2008, the township and COCIC - who had been given ownership of the land by Franklin County and the township - partnered to tear down three apartment buildings at 299 and 328 Mix Ave., and 4619 Stiles Ave. The buildings had been vacated for years and had become a safety hazard.
Recently, the COCIC approached trustees about the township regain ownership, only costing the township filing fees.
According to Hatmaker, all liens on the property have been removed.
“I think it makes sense to do this,” said Kennedy. “I think it gives us direction on where we want to go on the property.
Schlosser suggested placing “No trespassing” signs on the property, to make the Franklin County Sheriff's Office alert of any suspicious activity.
Residents at the meeting tossed ideas for the property to trustees, including a go-kart track, a new senior center and a broad family-oriented area.
Regardless of the future plans, Schlosser was pleased with the transfer.
“The area has a lot of opportunity,” she said. “This is a great opportunity.”
