PT sets new criteria for street lights
Prairie Township Trustees have approved revising criteria for street light installation.
Because street lights are installed through a street light assessment district, Township Administrator Tracy Hatmaker said, requests for lights must meet one of two criteria.
The first requirement is that the location for the light must be on a major collections street. That street must carry 4,000 average daily trips a day and connect to a major arterial street. The street light’s primary purpose should not be to light private property.
The second criteria is that an area in need of a street light must be considered to be harboring serious criminal activity over time.
Hatmaker stressed that the criminal activity would have to be periodic and “over time,” and be confirmed as such by the sheriff's office.
Trustees also approved a sidewalk program for those interested residents at their March 25 meeting.
Residents believing their sidewalks are in need of improvement can contact the township.
The township will fund the project through the general fund, but property owners will pay back the cost either up front or with assessments to their property taxes over 10 years.
