Bexley buys 600 tons of salt for winter

(by Rachel Scofield, Staff Writer - January 17, 2009)

Bexley Council has agreed to purchase 600 tons of salt from the Ohio Department of Transportation for a total of $45,000.

Last year, the price of salt was $49 per ton, but it rose to $150 per ton for this year. Bexley waited to purchase salt with the hopes that priceas would drop, service director Bill Harvey said.

"I commend us for having the guts to wait," Mayor John Brennan said.
ODOT has excess salt for sale at $75 per ton as long as Bexley collects it by Feb. 1, Harvey said.

According to the ODOT agreement, the state "deemed it in the best interest of the traveling public to provide certain political subdivisions with a limited amount of road salt" because of the "lack of availability in the State of Ohio."
