Reynoldsburg to celebrate MLK Day
(by Rachel Scofield, Staff Writer - January 17, 2009)
A Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Day Celebration will be held at 7: 30 p.m. Jan. 19 in Reynoldsburg City Hall.
The theme will be "A Dream Imagined - A Dream Realized."
Pastor Maurice Bloomfield will deliver the keynote address on what King's "Dream" means now for America, according to Reynoldsburg resident Bruce Sowell who helped plan the event.
King's dream will be realized the day after the celebration with inauguration of Barack Obama, Sowell said.
"We are coming into a new era," Sowell said. "I never expected to see in my lifetime (an African American president)."
Sowell said that the unifying of different races behind Obama was what King intended when he said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Three people will be honored for "their service to the citizens of Reynoldsburg, Ohio," Sowell said.
This year's honorees include Pastor G. Jerome DeCarlo, local business owner Bob Martin and Reynoldsburg police officer Tony Hines.
The event is free and open to the public.
Sowell said that he hopes the Unity Day Celebration will be an annual event that will expand to include a brunch and activities throughout the year.
