Volley for the Cure: Game raises money for research

The Bexley High School gymnasium will be a sea of pink Sept. 24 when the girls' volleyball team hosts an
event to raise money for breast cancer research.
The "Volley for the Cure" event will begin at 5 p.m. and will include three volleyball matches against
Westerville North.
"We're trying to fill the stands to raise money for breast cancer," parent Kim Golden said. "Everybody
will be in pink, all the players, the ball, the officials. Everything's pink."
Admission to the event is $6.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the research to find a cure for breast cancer, a disease in which
182,460 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in American women this year alone, according to the Susan
G. Komen for the Cure organization.
"It's helping us realize that we do need to try to help find a cure for breast cancer," Bexley High
School junior Eva Golden, 17, said.
The event will include a freshman, junior varsity and varsity game, as well as T-shirt sales, concessions,
games for audience members in between the matches and a silent auction.
"It's just a fun evening for a great cause," Kim Golden said.
Volunteers also will hand out breast cancer awareness information.
This is the second year Bexley has hosted the fundraising event. Organizers hope even more community
members and fans will fill the gymnasium rows, all with a common cause - to raise money for breast cancer
research.
"The girls really run it, and it's their night to raise money," Kim Golden said.
Each student already has sold 20 pink T-shirts, and organizers are encouraging those in attendance to help
fill the stands with pink clothing. Those who purchased a T-shirt will be admitted to the event for free.
"(The students) have been talking about it since last year," Kim Golden said. "They just want to raise more
money and get the word out."
