WABA looking for vendors for Taste of Westland

(by Sandi Latimer, staff writer - August 30, 2012)

The Westland Area Business Association is accepting reservations for Taste of Westland, a showcase of local businesses and restaurants.

The event is co-presented by the Westland Area Commission (WAC) and Murray Hill Dental. It will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Westland High School. Admission is $5.

“It (will) open your eyes to what is out there in the community,” WAC vice chair Bill Steimer said. “We have businesses here in the Westland area you may never have heard of.”

All proceeds will fund student activities in the area, WAC member Adam Slane said.

Vendors should contact Linda Pitts at the Westland Area Library at 878-1301 by Sept. 10. The cost to rent a booth is $25.

Support to change city council

The commission continues urging Columbus City Council to add an amendment to its charter, which would change how city council members are selected, to the upcoming ballot.

The seven members of the city council are elected at large. The proposed change would have seven council members elected from assigned districts and four at large.

The Columbus Coalition for Responsive Government recently failed to collect enough valid signatures to get the issue on the ballot.

Slane said he is trying to get the issue approved through a citizen’s initiative.

“Will council really do it?” asked WAC member Shawn Thomas. “Would they agree to have their jobs abolished?”

“To be honest with you, I don’t think that council will do it,” WAC member Dave Van Order said. “we’ll have to be a more vocal group to get anything done.”

Zoning petition

The commission approved a zoning variance so a drive-thru window could be built for a proposed coffee shop on Holt Road.

Dana Jablonski, operator of Mean Bean, said he hopes the request will be forwarded and approved by Columbus City Council in time to open by Oct. 1.

The coffee shop is slated to operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and will offer Wi-Fi for patrons. WAC members said this is a new type of business for the Westland area.
