Westland Area Library gets 2,000-square foot expansion

(by Sean Lehosit, Westside Editor - August 30, 2012)

The Westland Area Library staff invites the public to view the 2,000-square foot expansion of their facility from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Earlier this year, officials leased a neighboring storefront, which was formerly a dentist office.

According to library manager Michele Lowe, the expansion would help address spacing needs.

“Over the years demand for the meeting room has grown and several times teachers were required to be flexible with their class schedule to accommodate incoming groups,” Lowe said.

The new space will be converted into administrative offices, used for storage and become a community education center. The center will host GED and English as a second language courses (ESL), sponsored by South-Western City Schools (SWCS).

“Southwest Public Libraries has a long-standing relationship with South-Western City Schools and, as part of that partnership, the school district provides adult basic education courses at the Grove City Library and Westland Area Library throughout the school year,” Lowe said.

The courses are also offered at the Grove City Library and the South-Western Career Academy.

The space will also be used for programs like eBook tutorials and book discussions, Lowe said. Southwest Public Libraries are increasing its inventory of digital books for tablets and eReaders. These titles automatically expire after an allotted time, saving patrons from worrying about late fees or lost or stolen items.

GED classes are held at the Westland location on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon, at the Grove City location on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon and every day at the career academy from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m.

ESL classes will be offered at Westland on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon and at the career academy on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. This course is not offered in Grove City.

Classes begin on Sept. 10. Each course is six weeks long and is free to those who are 19 years and older.

To enroll, call 801-3477. Residents within the SWCS district are prioritized during  registration.
