Letter to the editor - city needs its own dog park
Several years ago my husband and I attended a meeting in our neighborhood, Concord Lakes, to discuss a dog park planned for the Demorest Road property. Imagine my surprise when I opened my paper last week to find we were having more discussions and this time not all favorable.
I for one am all for that property being turned into a park, which includes off-leash areas for dogs. While I am currently without a dog, I know people in Grove City love their canines and will happily use the park. As the article correctly points out, many of our residents use other communities’ dog parks and have to travel to impose on those communities’ taxpayers’ largess.
I also love the idea of a large amenity being put on my side of town. While I pay my taxes and perform my civic responsibilities as well as the east and south ends of Grove City, I do not feel the amenities have been spread as evenly. There is much talk of safe bike trails for the residents coming up from Orders Road or from Buckeye Parkway, but my family has to share space with Walmart trucks or use the narrow Grove City Road which has on-again-off-again paths. All of the important amenities in the town are east of Broadway.
The property for the proposed park is being used by ATV and dirt bike riders, which can’t be pleasant for the nearby residents (unless, of course, they are using it for that purpose).
For a dog park, Demorest Road is a much better location than the downtown property that was proposed. It has enough space and enough residents who can walk to it to make it workable. Trust me, there is not that much activity going on in this end of town that traffic for the park would interfere. Also, there is a large parking area to accommodate traffic.
As for people coming from other communities, I say, “Welcome.” Goodness knows, our residents have gone to those communities to use their amenities long enough. It’s time Grove City stop sponging off other communities and begin to provide for itself.
