London Middle School principal and assistant hired

London City Schools hired from within its ranks to fill two administrative positions at London Middle School.
On July 24, the school board approved the employment of Adelle Faulkner as principal. She has worked for the district for over 20 years, most recently splitting her time between directing London Academy and serving as assistant principal at the middle school. The board awarded Faulkner a three-year contract, effective Aug. 1. She replaces Darren Fillman.
Jonathan “Clint” Hayes is the new assistant principal. He has been with the district for approximately 10 years, teaching health and physical education. Earlier this month, the school board changed the assistant principal position from part-time to full-time to better address student discipline. Hayes received a one-year contract, effective Aug. 1.
Interim superintendent Tom Ben said he received over 45 applications for each of the positions. He made the principal selection. A group that included middle school staff members helped to make the assistant principal selection.
“I’m of the belief that if you have quality people within the district who have worked hard, they should have the opportunity to move up,” Ben said.
Pay-to-Participate for Band
Members of the high school band will now pay a $55 pay-to-participate fee to cover transportation costs for away football games, competitions and events. The fee matches the transportation portion of the pay-to-participate fee that student-athletes pay. The new fee prevents the district from eliminating travel gigs for the band.
Smoking on School Grounds
The school board discussed changing its policy regarding tobacco use on school property. On the table is the possibility of eventually making the campus entirely smoke-free. To explore the logistics and weigh the pros and cons, Ben said he would talk to employee union leaders and others in the district and get back to the board.
