Camp Chase included in Grove City's Civil War exhibit
Did you know New York City considered aligning itself with the Confederate states during the Civil War and Robert E. Lee was offered command of the Union Army?
Are you aware the Camp Chase Confederate Prisoner of War facility was Columbus’ first tourist attraction?
These little known facts of the War Between the States are part of a special exhibit at the Grove City Welcome Center and Museum, 3378 Park St., in the Town Center. The exhibit is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and runs through July 31.
A special ‘last chance’ open house will be held July 28 during the Grove City Homecoming from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum does not charge admission, but donations are accepted.
Special guest at the event will be Civil War re-enactor, historian and musician Steve Ball who will play tunes of the war years intermixed with bits of history. Ball also has numerous items on display at the museum including original sheet music from the Civil War era, a photograph of the Ohio 37th Infantry marching in Chillicothe and an 1850 guitar. He will be at the museum from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will perform at 11 a.m.
Also taking part in the program will be Dick Hoffman, a member of the Hilltop Historical Society and an authority on Camp Chase, a Civil War historical site. Hoffman will be at the museum from 10 a.m. to noon to answer any questions about Camp Chase.
Both men are interested in sharing their knowledge about the Civil War and the history of Camp Chase with visitors.
Some of the exhibit items at the museum include the last national flag of the Confederate states, personal letters written home during the war years, family heirloom pieces, rifle, pistols, saber, metals, Union cap and more.
Three different videos about the Civil War are also playing throughout the day.
