Independence parade, fish fry will be in conjunction

(by Sandi Latimer, staff writer - June 12, 2012)

This year’s Westland Area Independence Parade is in conjunction with the Prairie Township Fish Fry on June 30.

“We’re trying to make it more of a community event,” said parade chair Dennis Horn. “Instead of having two separate events, we’re going to make it one.”

The parade was formerly the Saturday prior to July 4.

According to the Westland Area Business Association (WABA), changes have been made to the parade this year.

The parade units will form at the Lincoln Village Shopping Plaza and launch south on Olde Village Road, west on West Broad Street and then turn south on Norton Road before disbanding at Prairie Norton Middle School – one block from the fish fry.

This year’s parade theme concerns businesses and community working together toward the future of the Westland area.

Youth groups and athletic teams will line up at the east end of the parking lot while all other groups meet at Olde Village Road. The parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. The post-parade celebration and fish fry begins at 11 a.m.

Parade rules stipulate nothing can be thrown from a vehicle, float or participant. Individuals walking along the curb must pass out items rather than throwing them to the crowd. Water guns and water toys are allowed.

Literature and coupons must also be distributed along the curb. Walkers should maintain pace with their parade entry.

Animal entries, such as horses, must have clean-up provisions.

Entry fees are $50 for political groups and individuals, $30 for businesses, $10 for non-profit groups, and no charge for youth groups and athletic teams.

Checks should be made payable to WABA and sent to Horn at Doctors Hospital OhioHealth, 5100 W. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43228.
