Hilltop Kiwanis makes preparation for flag season

(by Sean Lehosit, Westside Editor - March 22, 2012)

Several years ago the Hilltop Kiwanis launched its Patriotic Pride Project, and now in its third year, more than 100 residents and businesses participate annually.

The money raised through the project is channeled back into the community, through the form of scholarships, buying school supplies and helping families in need.

Some of the local businesses who support the project have been Cruisin’ Classics, Buckeye Ranch, Columbus West Park and Parkash & Prashkar Sunoco.

Tom Stewart, Kiwanis member and owner of Columbus West Park, purchased enough flags to line the park’s entire entry road. Stewart and another member, Tim Barhost, recruit their neighbors and line their entire block with flags.

“A trip down either street during the patriotic holidays will give you a real sense of Americanism,” Kiwanis member Vickie Malone said.

They modeled this fundraiser after a similar program started by a Kiwanis club in Jackson, Mich., where several thousand flags are raised each season – earning them the name, “Flag City.”

For $30 per year, the Hilltop Kiwanis will install a 10-foot pole in a resident’s yard and give them an American flag.

“We bring (the pole) out and put in their yard in close proximity to an outside light.” Malone said. “We then put the flag up and take it down for five flag holidays of the year.”

Those five flag holidays are Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

“Some have asked us to leave them up for the summer. In those instances we are happy to comply, we take care of our customers,” Malone said. “We replace any that are worn and then begin the project again the following spring.”

One of the project’s largest supporters is the American Legion Don Gentile Post, which members not only donate money, but also volunteer their time and help replace worn flags.
