Westland Mall to seal off interior entrance to Sears

(by Sean Lehosit, Westside Editor - September 26, 2011)

Plaza Properties, owner of Westland Mall, plans to erect a barrier wall at the mall’s interior entrance to Sears and to secure the vacant portion of the mall.

Plaza Properties filed a building permit with Franklin Township on Sept. 15 in regards to the project.

The project will cost an estimated $50,000. It is scheduled to start in October and should be complete by the end of the year.

“This permit was requested by the mall, Sears owns our store and we are continuing to operate at this location,” said Kimberly Freely, spokesperson for Sears Holding Corporation.

Freely said she cannot comment on any future plans for the mall.

The interior of Westland Mall remains mostly vacant except for Champs Sports, Westside License Agency, Homes on the Hill (HOTH) and a few other small outlets.

According to HOTH Executive Director Stephen Torsell, the non-profit organization is currently searching for a new space. Its lease runs out in November.

Plaza Properties could not be reached for comment.

When I read this article it appears that Sears is speaking for Plaza Properties. Additionally, there are more tenants in the mall than listed in this article. If this is the case Sears should let the owners speak for what is / is not happening at Westland Mall.
